Wes Anderson Movies Make Me Feel Young

I love Wes Anderson. I would probably go as far as to say that he's my favourite movie maker. That being said, I don't know a lot about movies.

His style calms me down, makes me laugh, but also makes me terribly sad sometimes. It's meant to, I suppose. I must have watched The Royal Tenenbaums at least 12 times at this stage.

Jessica Hische's typography in Moonrise Kingdom so perfectly embodies Anderson's style, and I've been a fan of hers ever since. You can follow her Twitter here, she's very funny and posts informative stuff.

This colour palette by Beth Mathews is awesome.

And now I'm downloading Rushmore, Googling late-night restaurants in Copenhagen, and not planning to go to bed any time soon (3 hour evening naps, you slay me).

Another Week Begins

I can't believe it, another week has come to an end! It's Sunday night, and I'm sitting here with wet hair at 23.30. I should be getting ready to go to sleep, but I'm tempted to stay up, finish this post, then watch an episode of Girls, which I've become fascinated by. I've had a great, relaxing weekend; a lovely phone call with my mom, a trip to The Little Mermaid, a cinema visit to see Hitchcock (beautiful cinema, great movie, annoying girl sitting beside me), my first McDonald's trip in a decade, and lots of cycling.

Tomorrow is the beginning of my 5th week on the carpentry course. Last week was a bit of a nightmare, to be honest. We did a lot of Sketchup, which was great, except that I struggled with it, and I'm only now coming to grips with it. I realised I was measuring 90 degree angles incorrectly, and learned the benefits of choosing a good, crack-free piece of wood before starting to cut it. I made a lot of progress, and I'm ready to start the next week full of enthusiasm and having learned some important lessons, but it never feels good to struggle with things.

Because everyone else, bar one or two people, have prior experience, either in designing or in practical woodwork, I'm so completely behind. I have a Masters in Sociology, for goodness sake, I have no practical real world skills! I have to keep reminding myself to be patient, before this I did pass level maths, where nothing was too taxing. I haven't been in school in a very long time, and I never ever ever did wood work or technical drawing. Using a saw, a chisel, measuring on wood, all the things most of the class take for granted, are complete uncharted territory for me. Patience with myself, trying to pick things up quickly, and not getting annoyed with myself when I don't, are key here.

This week I attended my ballet class. I made a lot of progress from the previous week-my body didn't hurt after, I find myself becoming more flexible already, and I'm finding it easier to remember sequences of steps and do them properly. I also did a few shifts at my new job, and again, I'm remembering how to use the till (it's in Danish!), learning the ins and outs of the place, and becoming more confident.

I don't want to make this post massively long, so I'll post some pictures in a new entry.

This Week

It's the weekend, and the end of my third week of carpentry. This week, myself and one other guy made a bench to go at a table we're going to put in our workshop to eat lunch at. I'll post pictures and descriptions at another time.

I brought my bike to to the shop I bought it from, and experienced some ingrained sexism on the part of the shop guy. It gets really old, and I expected better from Denmark, but I guess that was too much to ask of the bike world.

It's finally stopped snowing (actually, I slightly take that back since I wrote this yesterday, it snowed a bit lat night and it's sleeting big time now) so when I wake up there isn't a thick blanket of snow covering the streets. It's getting easier to cycle to school, getting warmer overall, and some little flowers are peeking their heads out of the ground in anticipation of Spring.

Leo found one of the teachers making sourdough and a lamb stew out here. Amazing.

I made a tiny bunting

Did you know you can simply buy chamomile flowers which costs about 1/10 of when it comes in tea bag form? Life-altering realitsation

Leo and August with the table. Next to follow-pictures of the bench I made

This weekend was spent lounging, cycling, talking to my new boss about my new job, eating, and going to a lovely cinema to see The Master. What a strange, strange film. The cinema was beautiful, very art deco with black and white tiled floors. We got a coffee and cookie before, the seats were very comfortable, the whole experience was incredibly hygge.

This morning I discussed Christmas with Leo, and how much I love it, as a concept and in actuality. He told me I was being immature and that Christmas is a commodified joke. I told him I don't care. In protest I'm going to watch Elf later on and think about cinammon and nutmeg. I will not be censored.

Life is good, but it's once again time to reassess everything, and I'm thinking that I need to start planning what to do once this short course is over (it's only 6-7 months, and we're starting the 4th week). I need to plan a potential apprenticeship, an area to relocate to, lots of stuff to be thinking about.
